offpeaktokyoは、2017年に撮影者の「日本的なもの」への関心から始まったプロジェクトです。
ここでいう「日本的なもの」とは、伝統的なものや由緒正しいものではありません。観光地や名所ではなく、人々が暮らす東京の「オフピーク」な瞬間に目を向けることで、日常の中に現れる日本らしさを捉えようとしていました。
最近は、写真の中に答えを探すことを、少しやめています。 関心があるのは、人々が都市空間をどのように使っているのか、その営みのあとに何が残されているのか。そして、本来なら見過ごしてしまうような「今そこにあるもの」です。
誰かが置いたもの。書いたもの。直したもの。使った跡。意図された都市と、実際に使われている都市のあいだに生まれる、小さな痕跡。
「これは東京だ」と説明するのではなく、「これは東京にあった」と記録する。
offpeaktokyoは、そうして集めてきた都市のフィールドノートであり、いまだ結論の出ていない「切り抜きぱなし」の集合体です。
offpeaktokyo began in 2017 as an exploration of what might be considered distinctly Japanese.
By “Japanese,” I did not mean the traditional, historic, or culturally iconic. I was interested in Tokyo in its “off-peak” moments: away from landmarks and spectacle, in the unofficial and ordinary ways the city is lived in. At first, I hoped these moments might reveal something about what makes Japan feel like Japan.
More recently, I have become less interested in finding answers in photographs.
Instead, I find myself drawn to how people inhabit the city: how they use its spaces, what they alter, and what they leave behind. Things placed, written, repaired, improvised, worn down, or forgotten. Small traces that emerge in the gap between the city as it was designed and the city as it is actually lived.
Rather than saying, “This is Tokyo,” I prefer to say, “This was in Tokyo.”
offpeaktokyo is a field record of these observations—fragments of a city collected without insisting on a conclusion.
